If there are many things or colors in the background, it can focus off the subject.

You can of course remove elements in the background through image processing, but it can be a big project in some photos. Then black and white is the way forward.

It simplifies the blurred background and focuses on the main subject.

So here's a guide on how to change your color image to black & white.

1. First open your image in gimp.

2. Right click on Picture layer and

     select (New layer)

3. press (OK)

4. Select Condition: Color and press (Color)

5. Select (Bucket Fill Tool.)

6. Make sure your new layer is selected and (Left click on the image.)

Now your picture is in black and white.
